Proven Tips, Tools and Tactics to Stop Child Bed Wetting

Are you a parent who is dealing with the frustrating problem of child bed wetting? If you have a child wetting the bed who is over the age of 5 or 6, you may well be wondering if it's ever going to end! While bed wetting is annoying it is rarely a serious cause for concern and will usually disappear on it's own. Here's a closer look at some bedwetting causes, cures, remedies and ideas for stopping the problem.

Child bed wetting - What you need to know

First of all, it's important to understand the facts behind bed wetting. It's not some disease or disorder that you need to worry about. This is a common problem in children. In fact statistics show that about 15% of children over three wet the bed and boys are more likely to have the problem than girls. This is a condition which frequently runs in families; however, by puberty, the problem should be well and truly over.

Why does my child wet the bed?

When child bed wetting occurs frequently, parents may find themselves wondering, why does my child wet the bed? There are many possible explanations. Most commonly bed wetting is due to a small bladder. A child's bladder is smaller than an adult's and can't store the quantity of urine all through the night. Bed wetting may also be due to events in children's lives that make them feel insecure, such as the death of a friend or family member, moving, a new baby, or divorce. Sometimes the problem occurs because a child hasn't yet developed bladder control or perhaps a sleep disorder could be the culprit. In rare cases a kidney problem may be the cause.

How do I stop my child from wetting the bed?

So, how can you help your child if they are having problems with bed wetting? There are several ways that you can help. Most importantly don't be angry with your child, he is not doing this on purpose to annoy you! Your child dislikes wetting the bed and is usually acutely embarrassed by it. So instead of punishment, find ways to encourage your child and help them. You can do this by making sure that your child doesn't drink too much before going to bed. Most importantly, remind your child to use the bathroom before bedtime. You may even want to wake your child up once or twice in the night to use the bathroom as well.

When your child manages to wake up dry, make sure that you praise them lavishly.

Although child bed wetting can be hard to cope with, it usually disappears on it's own. A positive attitude towards the problem will help your child overcome it. If the problem persists as your child grows older, then consider seeing a physician. However don't rush down the medication route, all chemical medications have side effects. Better options are herbal and homeopathic remedies which have the same beneficial results, but are much safer.
